BÂRSANA Monastery

The divine beauty is closer to us Belonging to Romanian Orthodox Episcopy of Maramures and Satmar, the „Soborul Sfintilor 12 Apostoli” monastery from Barsana, it’s settled close to Iza shore, inside the Barsana commune (87 kilometers from Baia Mare), and the closest city would be Sighetul Marmatiei (22 kilometers). From kilometer 17 of District Road 186, going under a beautiful gate of Maramures, it twists smoothly the road that leads towards the monastery. The Iza Valley is a legend realm of Romanian Soul. Beside forests and hills, there is geography – more profound – of sentiments and emotions. At the very base of these hills, forests, feelings, there is faith, love and trust. Impressive Cult Shelter The church is settled in the eastern part of the monarchial complex, being at the same time the spiritual and compositional center of the entire ensemble. Taking in consideration other specific criteria’s of this monastery, the church was projected with the following dimensions: length of 22,57 meters, width of 12,2 meters and height of 57 meters, being one of the most taller buildings built in Europe. In front of the church we can encounter the summer altar, built in 1996-1997 from wooden and covered with shingles. The Abbey is a remarkable creating transposure of Maramures stylefrom wooden churches, situated on the south-west part of the complex.
